obangsaek (오방색 )
At the heart of Korean color tradition are the obangsaek (오방색 ), the five directional colors, which are red, blue, yellow, black, and white.
Together they symbolize universal harmony and balance. They are not prescriptive and can be substituted and/or combined with subdued hues to create a variety of color schemes.
These vibrant and contrasting colors were widely used in everyday and special ceremonial attire, architectural decoration, and household objects. OBANG House brings this traditional aesthetic through contemporary designs on its hand thrown ceramics and commercial paintings.
i-ching trigrams
In addition to color, OBANG House incorporates symbology from the I-Ching trigrams through the use of three lines. Present as a national symbol on the Korean flag, the most commonly seen trigrams represent fire, water, earth, and heaven. Secondary trigrams include lake, thunder, wind, and mountain. Every trigram can be combined with another to create a deeper meaning.
